Music, as a structured envelope of sound, is probably the most effective and safe opener to the doors of the psyche.
It reaches beyond personal defences to the realities and beauties of the person. Music gives access to the discovery of inner strength,
uncovers the potential for creativity, and manifests ways in which life can be lived from a centre of inner security (Helen Bonny).
Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) (The Bonny Method) is a form of music-centred transformational psychotherapy taught and practised throughout the world. In contemporary practice, a spectrum of GIM and simpler Music and Imagery (MI) methods are used, so that work can be undertaken in different ways and with clients who have a wide range of difficulties.
The Integrative GIM Training Programme is a UK based post-MA level training in GIM and MI, endorsed by the Association for Music and Imagery (AMI). It is intended for music therapists, arts therapists, counsellors, psychotherapists and other mental health professionals. The training programme also provides Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities for qualified GIM therapists and trainees.
